The People and How They Live
The Dominican Republic is a representative democracy with 29 provinces. The language is Spanish; learning a small amount will help. The leaders guide provides a suggested vocabulary.
The people are poor and have minimal employment. However, they are friendly and very appreciative of the work we are doing to help them. The village members help in the decisions on which homes that we build.
Part of our goal is to acquaint all participants with the community and their culture. Each group is asked to plan a carnival, including events and prizes that could interest all ages. Hints are provided in the leaders guide.
Here is a video that walks through the project from the Summer of 2008. It shows some of the houses before and after as well as talks to the participants and recipients of houses. Click here to be taken to the video.
